Beautiful Budapest has 23 districts that are ready for exploration. Each one offers a distinct style and vibe, ensuring something for everyone. Experience royalty in District 1 or enjoy the city’s nightlife in District 7. Perhaps you’re hoping to connect with nature? Then, in that case, District 2 is the place to be!
Here’s everything you need to know about the 2nd district of Budapest.
What are the things to do in District 2 Budapest?
Located on the Buda side of the Danube River, District II is primarily a residential area known for its green spaces, historical architecture, and family-friendly atmosphere.
That doesn’t mean it’s not bursting with fun activities for young internationals and locals in Budapest.
In fact, this part of the city can offer quite the adrenaline rush thanks to its expansive green areas, which offer wonderful opportunities for hiking.
That brings us to the first point.
1. Go Hiking
Hiking in Budapest is quite popular among locals, and it’s one of the best non-touristy things to do in the city. This is a great activity during the warmer months of the year and if you can brave the cold, a wonderful workout in winter.
So, if you were wondering whether Budapest is good for hiking, the answer is yes! Here are some good places to get you started near Hárshegy:
- Les-hegy déli kilátópont – located farther out
- Határ-nyereg – well-established and popular
- Látó-hegy – closer to residential parts of the district and Arpad Watch Tower.

Speaking of towers…
2. Climb a lookout tower
Another fun thing you can do in the 2nd district is enjoy panoramic views of the city. If hiking isn’t something you enjoy, there are several bus routes and railways to get you to some of the best lookout towers in Budapest.
As luck may have it, a lot of these are in District II and close to the border of District I.
Árpád lookout
You’ll need to go on a short hike to get here, but the city and river views up here will make it worth your while!
There are also several benches and tables here, so feel free to bring a picnic basket.

Károly Guckler Lookout
If you don’t mind a little hike, consider this lookout tower instead. It’s a former anti-craft bunker that’s been transformed into a domelike tower.

Kaán Károly-kilátó
Another well-known site in Budapest’s District 2 is this lookout tower in Hárshegy. You can enjoy views of Budapest and the Buda hills from atop this stone and wooden structure.

Makovecz Imre-kilátó
The second lookout tower on Hárshegy is a bit smaller, but it still offers panoramic views of Budapest, making your trip up here worth it.

3. Unwind in a thermal bath
Budapest is popular for its thermal baths, and after a long day of hiking, you’re going to need this to relax and rejuvenate your mind and body.
There are over 100 thermal springs in Budapest, and a few of the best ones are located in the city center.
However, you can avoid the crowds and do as the locals do at Lukacs Baths, one of the best thermal baths in District 2.

4. Enjoy being outside
One of the best things about the 2nd district is that you don’t need to hike to enjoy nature.
The area has several green spaces, not to mention a whole portion of it stretches along the Danube River, putting you close to water.
You can enjoy a leisurely time in District II by simply walking around, spotting cool architecture, and enjoying the serenity of nature.

A few wonderful places to relax in Budapest include:
- Gulbaba – a beautiful green area with striking views of the city’s skyline. Another fun fact about this spot is that you have to go up Budapest’s steepest street to get there. But don’t worry! It’s nothing like Lisbon. You can make it up in 3-4 minutes.
- Millenaris Park – picture a large green space with a pond, light installations, and lots of wonderful places to sit. Okay, now picture a few cafés selling cold beverages, sizzling hot fries, and intoxicating cocktails. That basically sums up this park. But there’s more, a modern lookout tower of some sort.
- Parliament View Point – Some may argue that the best place to get a picture of the parliament is right in front of it, but nothing beats this viewpoint. Firstly, you can get the parliament in all its glory. Secondly, you can also get the Danube River in your shot.
5. Ride the Children’s Railway
One of the most unique things you can do in Budapest is ride the Children’s Railway. It’s an odd concept from the communist era, but it’s stuck around, and many people enjoy it.
Head to Hűvösvölgy and enjoy this fun ride through the Buda Hills.

6. Treat yourself to a meal
The second district has lots of wonderful places to eat, and you can even find some of the best brunch places in Buda. And there’s a wide array of food spots to choose from.
A few favorite places to dine in District 2 include:
- Cinnamon – perfect for brunch!
- Montage Budapest – a wonderful laptop-friendly cafe near Gulbaba.
- Frejya – a franchise known for its mouthwatering croissants.
- Nor/ma Grand – a Nordic-style brunch and bakery.
- Zsiraf Buda – one of two branches in Budapest offering pizza, cocktails, and more!
- Nemo Fish & chips – oops. Sorry, Nemo.

Overall, District 2 in Budapest is a charming, easy-going area with a rich history and plenty of green spaces. It’s a great place to visit if you’re looking for a peaceful city escape.
