5 best day trips from Budapest in under 2 hours

When you think of day trips from Budapest, Szentendre is usually the first place that pops into your mind. It’s cute, it’s close, it’s an easy win—no arguments there. But Hungary has so many other gorgeous little spots worth exploring, and some of them are even closer than you’d expect.

Budapest is a beautiful city with lots to explore—from the architecture and jaw-dropping museums to the quirky ruin bars and vibrant brunch spots. But sometimes, nothing beats a city get away and you might find that all you need is a change of scenery, a slower pace and a breath of fresh air.
So, if you’re ready to wander a little beyond the usual suspects, here are some of my favorite Budapest day trip ideas. And yes, we’re skipping Szentendre this time.

Best Budapest Day Trips

1. Tata

One of the very first day trips I ever took from Budapest was to Tata, Hungary. I stumbled upon it during the Covid years, and it quickly became one of my favorite escapes whenever I needed a break from Budapest.

Tata sits about an hour away Budapest by train, just northwest of Tatabanya, and its far more charming than most people realise.  Think beautiful castles, peaceful lakes and a surprisingly impressive food scene.

If you love scenic lakeside walks, forest paths, and small town vibes, you’ll love discovering this Budapest day trip destination.

2. Martonvasar

Just half an hour from Budapest sits Martonvasar, a true hidden gem with an impressive rich history. Martonvasar is best known for its beautiful garden and the elegant Brunszvik Palace—the very place where Ludwig van Beethoven stayed and composed “Für Elise”.

While you’re here, you can also explore the Beethoven Museum, a must-visit for music lovers, and explore the English-style garden, which are about as romantic as it gets.

Even on a solo day trip from Budapest, I had the loveliest time. The locals were warm, the scenery was amazing, and it felt like one of those places I wanted to keep all to myself.

3. Zebegény

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape along the Danube Bend, Zebegény is one of the prettiest places to visit. This picturesque village sits close to popular spots like Kismaros, Nagymaros and Visegrad, and it’s very easy to reach, less than an hour by train from Budapest.

Zebegény is especially enchanting if you’re in the mood to be active. There are plenty of hiking and biking routes, all offering beautiful views of the Danube River. The only thing to keep in mind is the terrain: it’s a bit hilly, so be prepared if you’re planning to head uphill for those wide-open, unobstructed panoramas.

4. Vac

Vac is a thousand-year-old city with a rich cultural heritage and impressive mix of attractions. Located less than an hour away from Budapest, it’s child-friendly, dog-friendly and even bike-friendly, making it a great choice for all kinds of day trips.

This city is home to many beautiful highlights like the Baroque Main Square, a beautiful Danube promenade perfect for leisurely strolls, and the historic Triumphal Arch, which dates back centuries. If you’re craving something unique, relaxing and a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle, Vac is a great city to keep on your radar.

5. Etyek

There’s nothing quite like a wine-tasting day trip, especially around Budapest. Thanks to Hungary’s geography and long winemaking tradition, the country’s wine culture is rich, diverse, and some might say—still underexplored. So what better way to explore it than with a day trip from Budapest?

Beyond its beautiful vineyards, Etyek has a little extra charm to offer. The Korda Film Studio is located nearby, adding a touch of Hollywood magic to the region and making the experience feel even more special. A day trip to Etyek is perfect for those moments when you’re craving relaxation, a bit of exploration and a hint of something enchanting just outside Budapest.
