Lillafüred is one of Hungary’s best kept secret, but, the cats out the bag, here’s how you can explore the scenic hidden gem. This day trip from Budapest to Lillafüred is a bit too long for most people, but the travel time is definitely worth it.
Some might argue that Lake Balaton is Hungary’s best lake. They might, or not be right. However, the title of most picturesque, reminds-you-of-Lake-Bled award goes to Lillafüred.
I first discovered this lake in Hungary accidentally a few years ago and I’m so glad I did! People who’ve lived in Hungary for a while might be familiar with the lake but if you’re just starting to explore Hungary, Lillafüred might come as a hidden gem and surprise to you. Like I said earlier, the trip from Budapest to Lillafüred is longer than most popular day trip destinations like Tata, Szentendre and Vac.
However, it’s still considerably a short trip, with travel time being three hours if you take the longest, and most scenic route.
Where is Lillafüred?
Nestled in the heart of northeastern Hungary, Lillafüred is a breathtaking retreat for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone looking for a peaceful escape. It’s located 196km from Budapest and about 12km from Miskolc, one of Hungary’s largest cities.
Lillafüred is a romantic destination surrounded by the Bükk Mountains, offering a mix of scenic beauty, outdoor activities, and historic charm—making it a perfect day trip from Budapest.
Whether you decide to hop on the scenic forest train, explore caves, or take in the stunning waterfall views, this guide will help you plan the perfect visit.
How to Get from Budapest to Lillafüred
There are three main ways to reach Lillafüred from Budapest: train, bus, or car.
One of the most convenient and picturesque ways to get to Lillafüred is by train via Miskolc. This is my recommended way of getting to Lillafüred from Budapest (and also the only way I’ve gotten to Lillafured). But, more on that later, let’s first look at other ways you can get to Lillafüred from Budapest.
By bus
For a budget-friendly option, buses run frequently from Budapest’s Népliget Bus Station to Miskolc. It’s about 2-2.5hrs via bus from the station in Budapest to the one in Miskolc.
Once you make it to Miskolc, you can take a local taxi or bus to Lillafüred. If you want to keep costs low, getting there by bus is probably the best option.
By car
If you prefer flexibility, driving from Budapest to Lillafüred is an easy option that will take you around 2 hours.
Simply take the M3 highway toward Miskolc and follow road signs to Lillafüred.
Parking is available near the Palace Hotel and lake.

By train
The most scenic way to get to Lillafüred from Budapest is via train. This is also the most popular way to get there.
Here’s what you should do.
- Take the Intercity train from Budapest Keleti Railway Station to Miskolc Tiszai Station
- From Miskolc, take Tram 1 to Miskolc-Dorrotya utca. A single ticket costs 400 HUF.
- Upon arrival to Miskolc-Dorrotya utca, you’ll see the train station to your right. Purchase your ticket for the local Lillafüred Forest Train here. Board the train.
- Arrive in Lillafüred and start exploring!
GOOD TO KNOW:
🎟️ Travel time with the Intercity train is about 2 hours, 2 minutes and the train leaves from Budapest Keleti Station. You can purchase your tickets to Miskolc online or at a ticket machine.
Ticket prices can be anywhere from 2600 HUF to 6000 HUF depending on when you book. I recommend purchasing your ticket beforehand.
Another thing to keep in mind when planning your trip to Lillafüred is that the Forest Train has a fixed schedule.
Ideally, you’re going to catch your train from Budapest and plan your arrival to compliment the Forest Train’s departure.
Here’s how to plan your trip
Budapest to Miskolc (2hrs, 2 mins) Miskolc Train Station to Miskolc-Dorrotya utca (about 30 mins). Lillafüred Forest Train departures can be about once every hour/ every hour and a half.
The local Lillafüred Forest Train ticket costs around 5000 HUF for a return ticket (which you’ll most likely need) and you can pay for it with Szep card.
The train ride through the mountains takes about 30 minutes or 40 and it’s such a cute, scenic ride with glimpses of flowing rivers, villages and the chatter of birds.

Lillafüred Forest Train is one of Hungary’s most enchanting experiences! Originally built in the 1920s to transport freight, this narrow-gauge railway now serves as a charming tourist attraction.
What makes the ride special?
- It winds through dense forests, rolling hills, and hidden villages.
- The autumn foliage turns the railway into a golden tunnel of color.
- It feels like stepping into a storybook setting as you make your way to Lillafüred.
This 30-40 minute journey is the perfect introduction to Lillafüred and lets you soak in the beauty before you even arrive! In my opinion, this train ride is part of the Lillafüred experience.
5 best things to do at Lillafüred
Once you step foot in Lillafüred, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Here are the top activities to make the most of your visit:
1. Explore the Iconic Palace Hotel
At first glimpse, the Palace Hotel might appear like an actual palace but in reality, it was never built for royalty.
The Palace Hotel, built in the 1920s, is Lillafüred’s crown jewel and it was built for touristic purposes and served as such throughout the years. Several events where hosted here, travellers and explorers lodged here, and today, you too can spend a night for a whooping 80,000 HUF.
Even if you’re not staying here, you can:
- Take in panoramic views from the hotel’s lookout point.
- Walk around its majestic architecture and gardens.

2. Visit the Lillafüred Waterfall
Another hidden gem in this area that you shouldn’t miss is Hungary’s highest waterfall, which just so happens to be located right below the Palace Hotel. Needless to see, it is a must-see, even just for your curiousity.
The cascading water is especially beautiful in spring and autumn, and it’s a great spot for pictures and a nice little break before exploring the lake.
3. Take a boat ride on Lake Hámori
One of the main reasons to take the train ride from Budapest to Lillafured is to see Lake Hámori. This serene lake, which is often compared to Lake Bled, is surrounded by lush hills, and you have the chance to rent a boat for a one-of-a-kind experience.
Tickets cost about 3500HUF per person and up to 4-5 people can get on one boat. This is one of the busiest parts of the lake but boats are limited so might have to wait.
Each boat can be rented for about half an hour, offering enough time to enjoy the waters, snap some pictures and live in this wonder-like dream.
If you’d like to make this experience even more romantic, try to catch the sunset views from the lake.
4. Hike through the Bükk Mountains
For nature lovers, hiking trails around Lillafüred offer incredible views and depending on how time you have, you can enjoy a little hike through the mountains.
If you’re up for the challenge and don’t mind a little walking, explore the paths toward Garadna and Hámori Rock.
On the contrary, you can enjoy an even shorter walk around the lake aka the Lillafüred–Hámori Lake loop for a moderate scenic trail.
5. Ride the chairlift
If you thought the only available chairlift in Hungary was the one in Budapest, think again! Lillafüred offers a chairlift of its own and get this, the area also has caves.
The chairlift is about 1500m from where you’ll get off the train at Lillafüred Station. You’ll actually also pass by the caves on your way to the chairlift.
Depending on how much time you have, you can choose one or the other, or perhaps do both if you’re spending a night in the area.
Here are the caves to look out for:
- Anna Cave → Known for its unique limestone formations resembling tree roots.
- Szent István Cave → Features stalactites and dramatic rock structures.
Where to eat in Lillafüred
A trip to Lillafüred wouldn’t be complete without a food recommendation! If you’re going to spend the whole day in the area, you’re going to need to eat.
Luckily there are a few restaurants around offering Hungarian delicacies and other popular foods.
You can visit the restaurant at the entrance of Palace Hotel and enjoy lunch with a view.
Alternatively, you can grab a bite next to the train station where there’s lots of outdoor benches and a restaurant serving Hungarian soups, fish and chips, among many other dishes.
Most dishes cost between 2600-3600HUF, making it a much more budget-friendly option.
Is Lillafüred worth visiting?
If you were to ask me whether to take the trip from Budapest to Lillafüred, my answer would be an easy yes!
Lillafüred is more than just a picturesque village—it’s a place where history, nature, and adventure come together. Whether you’re wandering through its grand Palace Hotel, admiring the forest views, enjoying the views of Lake Hámori, every moment here feels like a retreat.
If you’re looking for a peaceful escape from Budapest—with just the right mix of scenic beauty and hidden wonders—Lillafüred should definitely be on your travel list.

Best Time to Visit Lillafüred
Th best part about visiting Lillafüred is that you can still enjoy the experience throughout the year, regardless of the season. Of course, each time of the year has its unique atmosphere so it’s up to you to decide what you like best.
If you visit in spring (May-June), expect comfortable temperatures (15°C – 25°C), perfect for hiking and sightseeing. Best for: Mild weather, blooming flowers, and fewer crowds.
In summer (July-August) you can enjoy warm weather and summer activities. Expect higher temperatures (25°C – 30°C), busier tourist spots, and vibrant greenery.
If you visit in September or October, expect crisp air (10°C – 20°C), golden forests, and fewer tourists. This is the best time to visit the lake for stunning fall foliage and peaceful hikes.
