Local’s Guide to the Best Brunch Places in Pest | Breakfast in Budapest

Everybody loves brunch, right? I know that I do! And luckily, so many people in Budapest share this sentiment. Over the last couple of years, brunch places in Budapest have been on the rise, and they’re so many good ones to try. If you’re looking for the best brunch in Pest, the more vibrant, down-to-earth, and historic side of Budapest, this guide’s got you covered.

But what makes a brunch place the best? I’d like to think it’s a combination of quality food, fresh and rich flavors, great service, and wonderful beverages to pair your scrumptious meal with. Plus, it goes without saying that price-and-value ratio matters a great deal.

With the growing scene of brunch places in Budapest, you can find everything from sweet to savory treats, vegan to meaty delights, and everything in between. It makes it much harder to find the best breakfast in Budapest with this ever-changing food scene, but it keeps things exciting because there’s always something new to try.

So, if you’re in Pest and looking for a brunch spot to rock your boat, here’s a list of top picks.

Best Brunch and Breakfast in Pest

1. Portobello Coffee, Brunch and Wine

PRO: Vegetarian | Bit of a hidden gem

Hours: Closed Tuesday & Wednesday | Thursday to Monday 09:00-17:00

First up on this best Budapest breakfast guide is Portobello. Tiny but mighty, this brunch place serves up some of the best goods in Pest and Budapest. They pride themselves in serving healthy, nourishing, and tasty foods, with a big nod to quality, sustainability, and seasonality.

The interior decor is warm and spacious. Walking into this brunch spot, you’ll be welcomed by smiling faces, a large natural wine collection, and the aroma of coffee.

When it comes to breakfast, the brunch spot serves delicious treats, including granola, Turkish eggs, and Kimchi Comte pancakes, which are available on weekends only. They also serve seasonal breakfast dishes such as the Beet Reuben, which you expect to find on the menu in Autumn and Winter.

You can pair your brunch with basic but quality coffees or maybe with a natural wine. If you visit later in the day, small plates are available and include foods such as red wine prunes, butternut squash, and basque cheesecake.

2. Meron

Address Website

PRO: Specialty coffee | Proximity to St Stephen’s Basilica

Hours: Open everyday | Monday to Friday 07:00-18:00 | Saturday to Sunday 09:00-18:00, 10:00-18:00 respectively

No brunch place in Budapest embodies living in the moment as much as Meron does. Their whole philosophy is NOW, THIS PRESENT MOMENT, and how to make it count. What better way to do that than through wonderful coffee and mouthwatering brunch?

If the name of this place rings a bell, that’s probably due to the fact that Meron Coffee is a chain, and they just opened a brand new spot in Budapest.

Sticking to their philosophy, the café’s interior space itself aims to set you up for the day. The brunch place is spacious, with seating overlooking the street and also offering a secluded sitting space. The colors are warm and bright, with whites, grays, and light brown tones surrounding the space.

While the café prides itself on specialty coffee, its breakfast and brunch doesn’t disappoint! Their coffee menu menu is extensive, and their brunch menu aims to match the standard. You can enjoy an Eggs Benedict, Croque Madame, and my favorite, the Scrambled eggs.

Whether you’re in the mood for specialty coffee, delicious toast, or Pain au Chocolat, Meron is up to the challenge, and they’re ready to serve something delicious—rightfully earning a spot on the best brunch and breakfast places in Pest.

3. Briøsh – The Egg Drop Project | Relative Pozsonyi

Brunch places in Budapest are taking breakfast to a whole new level, and the famous Korean egg drop sandwiches have entered the Pest brunch scene. For this recommendation, I’ve included two brunch places in Budapest that serve juicy egg sand drop sandwiches and a few other brunch classics.

Briøsh is nestled in Pest’s 7th district, and the café is a hidden gem ready to be discovered. It’s located right by Onyx Hotel, a luxury property in Budapest, and opens it’s doors to both guests and foodies. The interior decor is minimalist and modern, offering a wonderful backdrop for you to enjoy your egg drop sandwich, avocado toast, or a sweet treat.

Relative Pozsonyi has a more different vibe, offering a more quirky and secret-spot feel. The café is quite small in comparison to most brunch places in Pest and Budapest but still delivers high-quality dishes. They’re known for serving up tasty egg drop sandwiches, bagels, and nutritious bowls.

4. Grumpy Food Bar

PRO: Located in the popular 7th district

Hours: Open everyday | Sunday to Thursday 08:30 – 17:00 | Friday 08:30 – 22:00 | Saturday 08:30 – 19:00

Despite being called Grumpy, the ambience at this breakfast and brunch place is anything but that! Their whole vibe is generally down-to-earth and super chill. They’re a hippy spot and one of the best brunch spots in Pest and Budapest. Think French Bistro with tropical flair.

The café’s interior decoration also complements this super cool vibe. The restaurant’s owner, Sziszi, wanted to create a tight-knit spot that felt like visiting a friend rather than just dining out.

It’s safe to say this concept was well executed because Grumpy Food Bar is one of the most highly-rated brunch places in Budapest.

Be sure to visit hungry because their menu features various breakfast options. You can enjoy all-day brunch, tapas, salads, and delicious cocktails. But that’s not all. They have a main dish menu where you savor wraps, chicken tikka masala, and a chef’s offer.

The café is also located right in the party district, offering you a handful of things to do in the area, such as discovering ruin bars and wine bars and learning more about the district’s rich history.

5. Stika Gastropub

Address Website

PRO: Lavish, affordable dining

Hours: Open everyday | Monday to Friday 08:30 – 16:00 | Saturday to Sunday 08:00 – 16:00

If you believe that breakfast isn’t just one of a couple of meals but the most important one, you’ll appreciate STIKA Gastropub. This brunch place offers an interesting culinary experience and ensures a treat for the senses with its rich and moody ambience, warm welcome, and variety of foods and drinks.

The interior decor of this food spot is lavish but still very inviting. The different fusions of green liven up the space, from indoor plants to green tiles.

The café has spacious indoor and outdoor seating, ensuring that you have a good view of the Jewish district or stunning interiors.

For brunch and breakfast, STIKA offers a wide selection of delectable treats. It’s no surprise that they’re a popular and loved brunch place in Pest and Budapest as a whole.

Their menu includes Eggs Benedict, which can be served in 10 different ways, and if those options aren’t enough, you can enjoy breakfast burgers, sandwiches, and bagels.
