Budapest is a haven for not only architecture lovers but foodies as well! The city has many beautiful restaurants, working cafés, brunch places in Buda and Pest, and amazing bakeries. But with so many options, it’s hard to pick the right one. So, take it from me, a local, who’s selected only the best bakeries in Budapest.
Bakeries in Budapest, you have to try.
1. Vaj | The famous bakery in Budapest
Pros: Has three locations in the city
Hours: Vary based on the location.
Vaj is Budapest’s most popular bakery, and it’s also one of the best. The name vaj means butter in Hungarian, and they couldn’t have chosen a better name. A lot of people enjoy their mouthwatering pistachio-filled croissants and hearty sandwiches, among several other delicacies.
They also have two locations in Pest, one at Rakoczi Square and a newly opened one at Deak Ferenc Square, the city center, and another one in Buda.
All Vaj locations offer free WiFi, a spacious interior with lots of windows, an outdoor seating area, and laptop-friendly tables, making them a great bakery and a nice café from which to work.

2. Arán Bakery Budapest | The one in the Jewish Quarter
Pros: Centrally located
Hours: Mon-Fri 7:30 am – 6 pm, Sat-Sun 8 am – 3 pm
You can’t make a list of the best bakeries in Budapest without mentioning Arán Bakery. Arán means bread in Old Irish, and bread is their specialty, meaning you always have something good to take home with you. But that’s not all this quaint craft bakery is known for.
Their location along one of Budapest’s most popular streets in the party district certainly pulls crowds. But it’s their quality pastries that keep the crowds coming.
They have a rich selection of pastries, including Hungarian classics like túrós batyu (cottage cheese bun) or kakaós csiga (chocolate roll) and international favorites ranging from sweet to savory.
Keep in mind that it may be harder to get a place to sit at Arán Bakery, especially if you’re with a big group.

3. Nor/ma Bakery | The Scandi one
Pros: Scandinavian and Hungarian-inspired pastries
Hours: Mon-Fri 7 am – 7 pm, Sat 8 am – 6 pm
Most of Scandinavia is known for amazing cafés and bakeries. But you don’t have to hop on a plane to Copenhagen or Stockholm for a fika because you can enjoy one right here in Budapest.
They have a much bigger location in District 2 near Millenaris Park, called Nor/ma Grand, where you can still enjoy their pastries and also savor brunch.
Nor/ma Bakery is located closer to the famous Metropolitan Ervin Szabo Library. Nor/ma Bakery is great for cardamom buns, sweet and savory croissants, and local favorites like kakaós csiga, a yummy chocolate roll.
As the weather gets nicer outside, you can enjoy a cup of coffee in their outdoor seating area along a treelined street.

4. Déryné Bakery | The one with a French twist
Pros: Located away from tourist crowds
Hours: 7:30 am – 5:30 pm daily
If you want to eat a pastry in the sweet serenity of Buda, then you have to check out Déryné Bakery. They describe themselves as chic, sexy, cosmopolitan, yet utterly local, which is quite accurate.
And if you’re hungry for more than just a party, why not head next door to Déryné, their restaurant, enjoy a full meal, and head to the bakery for dessert?
They serve everything from baklava to pastries filled with cottage cheese and drizzled in orange syrup.
Déryné Bakery is a cute bakery not far from Fisherman’s Bastion in the Castle District, so be sure to do a little exploring.

5. Artizán Bakery | The local favorite
Pros: Several locations and variations all around the city
Hours: Based on location
With its main location in Budapest’s 5th district, Artizán Bakery is one of the best bakeries in Budapest. Artizán Bakery is a trendy pastry shop with a Scandinavian fusion. You can get everything from long-fermented sourdough bread to cardamom buns, kakao csiga, and savory treats.
They have a spacious interior where you can cozy up when the weather is a little harsh and get a whiff of freshly baked goods.
If you choose to sit outside, you can enjoy views of one of the most important Art Nouveau buildings by Ödön Lechner, who designed the Dreschler Palace, which is the current home of the W Budapest.
